Fragment- Paradox II

1200+ words in the last two hours, and none of it towards anything I need to finish. *sigh* Hopefully I'll have something tomorrow for the PP winter challenge (not sure what yet, but I'm planning on having something!

Takes place just after Jack gets into the TARDIS and shoots the paradox machine in "Last of the Time Lords." Way off of canon, obviously.

He had failed the Doctor.

Jack kept his eyes shut tight as his mind and body crawled back to life as he lay on the floor of the TARDIS. The scope of his failure urged him to just let the Toclafane kill him again, but a curious voice distracted him before he could move.

“That had to have hurt.”

Jack didn’t recognize the voice. He did recognize the next voice, however.

“Ya think?” There was the sound of someone walking, then the Doctor, his Doctor, said, “What did he do to my TARDIS?”

Opening his eyes, Jack found a man kneeling beside him, dressed in clothing that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Victorian based tv series. Beyond him, standing beside the damaged console, Jack could see the Doctor staring up at the tangle of wires that ran from the console to the ceiling, his black jeans and brown jacket a sharp contrast to the red, invasive mass of the Master‘s creation.

“It’s a paradox machine,” the stranger said as he rose to his feet.

The Doctor gave the man an irritated look. “I know that.”

The stranger didn‘t seem bothered by the Doctor‘s irritation. Actually, he seemed a little amused by it. The man crossed his arms across his chest and said to the Doctor, “You know, it’s actually quite ingenious when you think about it. The Master outdid himself, this time round.”

“And who’s fault is it that he’s outdoing himself on our TARDIS?”

The man looked surprised. “That wasn‘t my doing,” he said, “it was the Council’s decision to resurrect him!”

“Don’t remember you putting up much of a fight about it!”

“As if I had a choice.”

“That never stopped us before!”

“Uh, hello?” Jack said.

The Doctor looked his way. “Jack!” he said, before turning his attention back to the machine rising up out of the console. “About time you got up.”

Pushing himself to his feet, Jack asked, “What’s going on?”

The stranger smiled. “It’s a paradox,” he said.

“Uh, yeah,” Jack said, “I kind of figured that one out.” He looked at the Doctor. “How did you get in here?”

“We flew in,” the stranger said.

“Huh?”

With a shrug, the stranger said, “We dematerialized our TARDIS’s in the same place and, here we are! Quite simple, really.” The man held out his hand. “Oh, by the way, I’m the Doctor.”

Jack shook the man’s hand and stared at him.

Thinking about it, Jack found that answer made about as much sense as anything else that had happened over the last year and decided to just go with it.

Jack took a deep breath, rubbed his hands together, and took a step towards his Doctor. “So,” he said, “what’s the plan then?”

He saw the new Doctor raise an eyebrow and give his Doctor an inquisitive look.

A smile tugged at the Doctor’s lips. “Fifty-first century kind of guy,” he said.

The new Doctor chuckled. “Ah yes, I see.”

Jack took another step towards his Doctor. “Okay, please, tell me you have a plan, Doctor.”

The Doctor walked away from him, circling the console. “Oh, there’s a plan. Don’t know what it is yet, but I’m sure it’s a brilliant one.”

“That’s… comforting.”
